Calculate Your Breastfeeding Calorie Needs

ICMR-NIN 2024 Indian BMR · BMI-stratified lactation surplus · Safety flags · Indian food plan

Calorie needs during breastfeeding depend on your BMI, milk production stage, and activity level. ICMR-NIN 2024 recommends different lactation surpluses for underweight, normal, and overweight Indian mothers. Enter your current (postpartum) weight for the most accurate results.
Age, Height and Current Weight * Enter current postpartum weight (not pre-pregnancy). Used to calculate Mifflin-St Jeor BMR with ICMR-NIN 10% Indian phenotype correction. BMI determines your BMI-specific lactation calorie surplus (underweight vs normal vs overweight — all follow different evidence-based protocols).
Breastfeeding Stage * The calorie increment changes with infant age. 0-6 months: exclusive breastfeeding produces ~807 mL/day milk (gross energy cost 675 kcal). 6-12 months: complementary feeding reduces milk to ~550 mL/day. After 12 months: lower milk volume, less surplus needed. ICMR-NIN 2024 uses +600 kcal (0-6m) and +520 kcal (7-12m) for India.
Physical Activity Level * ICMR-NIN 2024 India-calibrated PAL values. Sedentary PAL reduced from 1.53 to 1.40 to reflect urbanisation and sedentary lifestyle shift in India. Most new mothers with infants fall in sedentary to moderate category.
Dietary Preference * Vegetarian diets use plant proteins with lower DIAAS (Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score). ICMR 2024: vegetarians need functional protein of 1.0 g/kg/day minimum to compensate for lower digestibility. 3:1 cereal:pulse:milk ratio achieves complete amino acid profile comparable to animal protein.
Weight Goal Safe weight loss while breastfeeding: maximum 0.5 kg/week (CDC / LLLI). Never below 1800 kcal/day. Rapid loss below 1500 kcal triggers prolactin suppression AND releases lipophilic environmental toxins stored in adipose tissue directly into breast milk (WHO toxicology evidence). If BMI below 18.5, weight loss is not recommended.
Health Conditions (select all that apply) GDM or diabetes triggers RSSDI 2024 diabetic MNT protocol (low-GI carbs, pre-feed snack, strict sodium). Each condition adds clinical flags and food guidance. Severe anaemia and thyroid conditions require clinical dietitian management.
