Calculate Your Postpartum Nutrition

ICMR-NIN 2024 · FAO/WHO BMR · Lactation TDEE · C-section recovery · GDM management

Educational and clinical decision-support tool based on ICMR-NIN 2020/2024, WHO/FAO, ESPEN, and RSSDI guidelines. Not a substitute for clinical dietitian assessment. C-section, GDM, anaemia, and thyroid conditions require individualised clinical management. Always confirm nutrition targets with your obstetrician or postpartum dietitian.
Age, Height & Current Weight * Used for FAO/WHO/UNU BMR with ICMR-NIN 2020 Indian correction (×0.91). Age bracket determines which BMR equation applies. Use current postpartum weight — not pre-pregnancy weight.
Weeks Since Delivery * Determines whether caloric restriction is safe. ACOG/LLLI: no intentional restriction before 6-8 weeks (puerperium). Also determines lactation phase (0-6 months vs 7-12 months) and ICMR-NIN caloric addition (+600 vs +520 kcal).
Mode of Delivery * Cesarean section triggers a 4-6 week acute wound healing protocol (ESPEN): protein 1.5 g/kg, Vit C 475-500 mg/day, zinc 17-30 mg/day, arginine 5.7-9 g/day for collagen synthesis and surgical site infection prevention.
Breastfeeding Status * Determines lactation energy addition. WHO/FAO: exclusive BF = 807g milk/day × 0.84 kcal/g = 675 kcal gross; partial BF = 550g milk/day = 460 kcal. ICMR-NIN adds safety margin: +600 kcal (0-6m) / +520 kcal (7-12m).
Physical Activity Level * ICMR-NIN uses lower FAO/WHO/UNU PAL ranges for Indian urban women. During puerperium (0-6 weeks) most women are sedentary (PAL 1.20). Activity progressively increases with recovery. Default to Sedentary if unsure during early recovery.
Weight Goal * Safe loss: 0.45-0.9 kg/week (≈2 kg/month) via 250-500 kcal deficit. ACOG/LLLI: no intentional restriction before 6-8 weeks postpartum. Caloric floor 1800 kcal enforced during lactation. Exclusive BF itself accelerates loss by ~1.45 kg extra at 12 months.
Health Conditions (select all that apply) Triggers clinical protocol modifications. GDM shifts CHO to 35-50%, adds dawn phenomenon meal-splitting advice, and RSSDI OGTT reminders. Anaemia activates AMB postpartum IFA protocol. C-section wound healing applies protein/Vit C/zinc/arginine targets.

⚕️ Clinical Disclaimer: This calculator provides population-level estimates based on ICMR-NIN 2020/2024, FAO/WHO, ESPEN, and RSSDI guidelines. Outputs are educational starting points — individual requirements may vary significantly based on medical history, lactation volume, metabolic rate, postpartum complications, and clinical status. C-section wound healing, GDM management, anaemia, thyroid disorders, and postpartum depression all require individualised clinical assessment. The caloric floor (1800 kcal) is a population-level safety parameter — your actual minimum may differ. Always confirm all nutrition targets with your obstetrician, postpartum dietitian, or general practitioner before making dietary changes.
