How We Calculate Your Plan

NIN-ICMR guidance, the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, and the ISSN protein position stand are published, peer-reviewed references. DietXP combines them using the rule set below - that combination itself isn't separately peer-reviewed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this calculator use different BMI cutoffs than international charts?

South Asians carry more visceral fat at the same BMI as Western populations, which raises the risk of diabetes and heart disease at lower body weights. NIN-ICMR 2024 and WHO Asia-Pacific guidelines use lower cutoffs for this reason: normal is 18.5 to under 23, overweight is 23 to 27.5, and obesity is above 27.5, versus the WHO global cutoffs of 25 and 30. This calculator uses Asian Indian thresholds so your result reflects actual metabolic risk, not a chart built for a different population.

How accurate is the BMR and TDEE calculation?

BMR is calculated using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990), which is consistently the best-performing predictive formula for resting energy expenditure in validation studies across general adult populations. TDEE multiplies BMR by an activity factor to estimate total daily burn. Both figures carry roughly plus or minus 10% individual variability, since actual metabolic rate depends on genetics, muscle mass, hormones, and other factors a formula cannot capture. Use these as a starting point and adjust based on your real-world weight trend over 2 to 3 weeks.

What is a healthy waist circumference for Indians?

Using Asian Indian action levels, waist circumference under 78 cm for men and under 72 cm for women is considered low risk. 78 to 89 cm (men) or 72 to 79 cm (women) is an action level where diet and activity changes are recommended. 90 cm or more (men) or 80 cm or more (women) is high metabolic risk requiring closer monitoring. These cutoffs are lower than Western standards because abdominal fat drives insulin resistance at smaller waist sizes in South Asian populations.

How much protein do I actually need per day?

The baseline RDA from NIN-ICMR 2024 is 0.83 g of protein per kg of body weight per day for a sedentary adult. This calculator scales that upward with activity level, up to 1.4 g/kg for athletes, in line with ISSN 2017 position stand recommendations. On a weight-loss plan, protein is set to a minimum of 1.0 g/kg to protect lean muscle mass during a calorie deficit.

What are NIN-ICMR food groups and why are they used instead of just calories?

NIN-ICMR 2024's My Plate for India model defines daily target quantities for cereals and millets, pulses and legumes, vegetables, fruits, milk and curd, nuts and seeds, and fats and oils, all calibrated to typical Indian diets and cooking patterns. Tracking food groups in grams alongside calories makes a plan easier to follow with everyday meals like dal, roti, sabzi, and curd, without requiring packaged-food calorie counting.

Is this calculator safe to use during pregnancy or for people with medical conditions?

No. This tool's calorie and macro targets are built for healthy, non-pregnant, non-lactating adults aged 18 to 80 and do not apply during pregnancy or breastfeeding. NIN-ICMR 2024 publishes separate RDA tables for those stages. If you have diabetes, hypertension, PCOS, thyroid disease, kidney or liver disease, or any other chronic condition, consult a registered dietitian before following this output.
