Diabetes care in Australia

Type 2 diabetes and Indian food in Australia

Australia’s diabetes risk test, AUSDRISK, adds points if you were born in Asia, including the Indian subcontinent. If you are diagnosed, registering with the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) gives you access to subsidised supplies and diabetes education.

Alongside your GP and Medicare

In Australia your GP diagnoses and manages the condition and can prepare a chronic condition management plan. Since July 2025 that plan can give you up to five Medicare-subsidised allied health visits a year, which can include an Accredited Practising Dietitian. DietXP is a private service from India and is not claimable on Medicare. Please let your GP know that you are using DietXP.

Indian food in Australia

Indian groceries are easy to find in suburbs such as Harris Park in Sydney and Dandenong in Melbourne, and India is now one of the most common countries of birth in Australia. We plan around local produce, packed lunches and weekend barbecues.

Practical details

  • Sydney and Melbourne are 4½ hours ahead of India, or 5½ hours in daylight saving time. Perth is 2½ hours ahead.

Bring your HbA1c and GP plan

Share your latest HbA1c, your medicines and any advice from your GP, diabetes educator or dietitian. We plan portions and meal combinations around them and never change medicines.

Nutrition education and practical food support. Diagnosis, medicines and medical treatment stay with your treating team.

Type 2 diabetes support in Australia: your questions answered

Do I have to stop eating rice or roti?

Not automatically. Portions, meal combinations and your individual care plan matter. Your dietitian and treating team can help you work through what is appropriate for you.

How much do the type 2 diabetes programmes cost in Australia?

Core (3 months) is AUD 506 and Extended (6 months) is AUD 962. These are the full prices, with nothing added when you pay.

What does each programme include?

Both start with a first consultation and a written food plan within 2 working days. Core adds 3 scheduled follow-ups and WhatsApp support during agreed hours. Extended adds 6 follow-ups, priority WhatsApp support, a nutrition progress assessment at 90 days and a full progress report at 180 days.

How do I pay?

When will I get my written plan?

Within 2 working days of your first consultation. Your follow-ups, booked on Australian time, then review how it is going and adjust the plan.

Which languages can I use?

English, Kannada, Tamil or Telugu, with Chandan. If you would prefer Hindi, tell us when you message us and we will tell you the options.

What time are the sessions?

Sydney and Melbourne are 4½ hours ahead of India, or 5½ hours in daylight saving time. Perth is 2½ hours ahead. We book a time that suits you.

Can I reduce or stop diabetes medicines?

Only your prescribing clinician should change medicines. Do not reduce or stop them because you start a nutrition programme or see a different glucose reading.

Is fasting or a very low-carbohydrate diet required?

No. Major changes to meals or fasting can affect glucose and may be unsafe with insulin or some medicines. Discuss them with your treating team before making changes.

Is this suitable for type 1 or pregnancy diabetes?

No. This programme is for adults with type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes and diabetes in pregnancy need support from the appropriate specialist team.

Can I claim dietitian visits on Medicare?

If your GP prepares a chronic condition management plan, you may get up to five Medicare-subsidised allied health visits a year, including an Accredited Practising Dietitian. DietXP is private and not claimable, and can sit alongside that.

Can I claim this on Medicare?

No. DietXP is a private online service from India. Your GP can include visits with an Accredited Practising Dietitian in a chronic condition management plan, and you can use DietXP alongside that.

Can my family join?

Yes. The person who cooks or helps with meals is welcome on your calls, whether they live in Australia or in India. If you are contacting us for someone else, please let them know. We ask for their agreement before we discuss their health.

What happens when my programme ends?

You can finish there or ask about continuing. We explain the options and the fee before you book anything new.

Your GP stays in charge
