Diabetes care in Canada

Type 2 diabetes and Indian food in Canada

A large Ontario study found that South Asian adults reached the same diabetes risk at a BMI of 24 as white adults at a BMI of 30. Risk starts at a lower body weight, so everyday portions and meal patterns matter.

Alongside your family doctor

In Canada your family doctor or nurse practitioner diagnoses and treats the condition. Several provinces also offer free dietitian advice by phone, such as HealthLink BC on 8-1-1 and Health811 in Ontario. DietXP is a private service from India and is not covered by provincial health plans.

Indian food in Canada

Indian groceries are easy to find in Brampton, Mississauga, Surrey, Calgary and Edmonton, and most supermarkets stock atta, lentils and spices. We plan around packed lunches, shift work and long winters.

Practical details

  • India is 9½ hours ahead of Toronto and 12½ hours ahead of Vancouver in summer, one hour more in winter.
  • Fees are in CAD and are the full amount you pay.
  • In an emergency call 9-1-1. In many provinces you can call 811 for health advice.

Bring your A1C and care plan

Share your latest A1C, your medicines and any advice from your family doctor or diabetes education program. We plan portions and meal combinations around them and never change medicines. In Ontario, OHIP pays for visits to registered dietitians in a Diabetes Education Program; ask your doctor if you qualify.

Nutrition education and practical food support. Diagnosis, medicines and medical treatment stay with your treating team.

Getting ready

What to have ready for your first consultation

You do not need to send reports before booking. We tell you how to share them before your first consultation.

  • Your latest HbA1c (%) and glucose readings in mmol/L
  • Results and notes from your family doctor or specialist
  • Your medicines, including insulin doses and timings
  • Any low sugar episodes: when they happened and what you had eaten
  • What you eat on a usual day, including tea, snacks and sweets

Type 2 diabetes support in Canada: your questions answered

Do I have to stop eating rice or roti?

Not automatically. Portions, meal combinations and your individual care plan matter. Your DietXP nutrition educator and your treating team can help you work through what is appropriate for you.

How much do the type 2 diabetes programmes cost in Canada?

Core (3 months) is CAD 504 and Extended (6 months) is CAD 959. These are the full prices, with nothing added when you pay.

What does each programme include?

Both start with a first consultation and a written food plan within 2 working days. Core adds 3 scheduled follow-ups and WhatsApp support during agreed hours. Extended adds 6 follow-ups, priority WhatsApp support, a nutrition progress assessment at 90 days and a full progress report at 180 days.

How do I pay?

After we confirm your booking in writing, we send the payment details on WhatsApp or by email. You pay the fee in CAD; payment goes to DietXP in India, so your bank may add a cross-border fee.

When will I get my written plan?

Within 2 working days of your first consultation. Your follow-ups, booked on Canadian time, then review how it is going and adjust the plan.

Which languages can I use?

English, Kannada, Tamil or Telugu, with Chandan. If you would prefer Hindi, tell us when you message us and we will tell you the options.

What time are the sessions?

India is 9½ hours ahead of Toronto and 12½ hours ahead of Vancouver in summer, one hour more in winter. We book a time that suits you.

Can I reduce or stop diabetes medicines?

Only your prescribing clinician should change medicines. Do not reduce or stop them because you start a nutrition programme or see a different glucose reading.

Is fasting or a very low-carbohydrate diet required?

No. Major changes to meals or fasting can affect glucose and may be unsafe with insulin or some medicines. Discuss them with your treating team before making changes.

Is this suitable for type 1 or pregnancy diabetes?

No. This programme is for adults with type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes and diabetes in pregnancy need support from the appropriate specialist team.

Should I keep my diabetes check-ups?

Yes. Keep your family doctor’s A1C checks, medicine reviews and eye and foot exams. DietXP adds help with everyday Indian meals between visits.

Is this covered by my provincial health plan?

No. DietXP is a private online service from India. Free dietitian lines such as HealthLink BC 8-1-1 or Ontario’s Health811 are good for general questions, and your family doctor can refer you to a local dietitian.

Can my family join?

Yes. The person who cooks or helps with meals is welcome on your calls, whether they live in Canada or in India. If you are contacting us for someone else, please let them know. We ask for their agreement before we discuss their health.

What happens when my programme ends?

You can finish there or ask about continuing. We explain the options and the fee before you book anything new.

Your doctor stays in charge

Keep following your clinician’s glucose-monitoring and low-glucose plan. Seek urgent local help for severe symptoms. We do not change medicines or manage glucose emergencies, and we do not claim to reverse or cure diabetes.

In an emergency call 9-1-1. In many provinces you can call 811 for health advice.
