IBS care in Japan

IBS and Indian food in Japan

Japan’s IBS guideline (Japanese Society of Gastroenterology, 2020) puts diet therapy in the first step of treatment. It notes that most evidence for the low-FODMAP diet comes from Western studies, and that its benefit in Japan still needs study.

Alongside your doctor in Japan

In Japan you can go straight to a local clinic. Public health insurance (National Health Insurance or your employer’s plan) usually pays 70% of the cost and you pay 30%. Large hospitals charge an extra fee, from JPY 7,000, for a first visit without a referral letter. The AMDA International Medical Information Center (0120-339-266 or 03-6233-9266) helps you find clinics where your language is spoken.

Indian food in Japan

Nishi-Kasai in Tokyo’s Edogawa ward has Japan’s best-known Indian community, and Indian groceries can also be ordered online. We work with Japanese staples such as rice, tofu, fish, noodles and konbini meals, alongside the Indian ingredients you can get.

Practical details

  • Japan is 3½ hours ahead of India.
  • Fees are in JPY and are the full amount you pay.
  • In an emergency call 119 for an ambulance.

Japanese staples, Indian flavours

Rice, rice noodles and many Japanese dishes are easy to adapt, while wheat, onion, garlic and pulses need more planning. We help you combine Japanese staples with the Indian food you miss.

Nutrition education and practical food support. Diagnosis, medicines and medical treatment stay with your treating team.

Getting ready

What to have ready for your first consultation

You do not need to send reports before booking. We tell you how to share them before your first consultation.

  • Your latest health check report (kenkō shindan) and any clinic results
  • Any food lists or low-FODMAP plan from a dietitian at your clinic or hospital
  • A simple diary of meals and symptoms for one or two weeks, if you can
  • Your medicines and supplements
  • What you eat on a usual day, including work meals, snacks and eating out

IBS support in Japan: your questions answered

Do I need an IBS diagnosis first?

This support is for adults with diagnosed IBS. If symptoms are new, unexplained or changing, see a doctor first rather than assuming they are IBS.

How much do the IBS programmes cost in Japan?

Core (3 months) is JPY 56,491 and Extended (6 months) is JPY 107,489. These are the full prices, with nothing added when you pay.

What does each programme include?

Both start with a first consultation and a written food plan within 2 working days. Core adds 3 scheduled follow-ups and WhatsApp support during agreed hours. Extended adds 6 follow-ups, priority WhatsApp support, a nutrition progress assessment at 90 days and a full progress report at 180 days.

How do I pay?

After we confirm your booking in writing, we send the payment details on WhatsApp or by email. You pay the fee in JPY; payment goes to DietXP in India, so your bank may add a cross-border fee.

When will I get my written plan?

Within 2 working days of your first consultation. Your follow-ups, booked on Japan time, then review how it is going and adjust the plan.

Which languages can I use?

English, Hindi or Kannada, with Maria. Tell us which you prefer when you message us.

What time are the sessions?

Japan is 3½ hours ahead of India. We book a time that suits you.

Will I have to stop eating Indian food?

Not automatically. The conversation starts with your usual meals and individual tolerance. We can explore practical alternatives without assuming an entire cuisine is unsuitable.

Is low-FODMAP part of every programme?

No. It is not necessary or suitable for everyone. If your doctor recommends it, ask about support from a registered dietitian (kanri eiyōshi) with low-FODMAP training, for a short trial, reintroduction and personalisation. It should not become an indefinite list of forbidden foods.

Can the programme promise symptom relief?

No specific outcome is guaranteed. Symptoms can have several influences, and food changes that help one person may not help another. Your medical care remains important.

Can I find an English-speaking doctor for IBS in Japan?

The AMDA International Medical Information Center (0120-339-266 or 03-6233-9266) can help you find clinics where your language is spoken, and phone interpretation for a clinic visit can be booked in advance. Please see a doctor first if your symptoms are new or changing.

Is this covered by Japanese health insurance?

No. DietXP is a private online service from India. Your clinic can advise on local dietitian services, and you can use DietXP alongside them.

Can my family join?

Yes. The person who cooks or helps with meals is welcome on your calls, whether they live in Japan or in India. If you are contacting us for someone else, please let them know. We ask for their agreement before we discuss their health.

What happens when my programme ends?

You can finish there or ask about continuing. We explain the options and the fee before you book anything new.

Your doctor stays in charge

Speak to your doctor about new, severe, persistent or worsening digestive symptoms. Do not use a food plan to delay medical assessment or stop prescribed medicines.
