IBS care in New Zealand

IBS and Indian food in New Zealand

Healthify, New Zealand’s health information site, strongly recommends support from a dietitian throughout a low-FODMAP diet. The FODMAP Made Easy app was developed by New Zealand dietitians, with content for people living here.

Alongside your GP

In New Zealand your GP diagnoses and manages the condition. For some conditions your GP or specialist can refer you to a free hospital or community dietitian, though places are limited in most regions. For free health advice at any time, call Healthline on 0800 611 116. DietXP is a private service from India and is not funded by Health New Zealand.

Indian food in New Zealand

Indian people are now New Zealand’s third-largest ethnic group, and Auckland suburbs such as Sandringham and Papatoetoe have well-stocked Indian grocers. We plan around seasonal produce, packed lunches and family meals.

Practical details

  • New Zealand is 6½ hours ahead of India, or 7½ hours in daylight saving time.
  • Fees are in NZD and are the full amount you pay.
  • In an emergency call 111. For free health advice call Healthline on 0800 611 116.

Low FODMAP, with Indian food

Many Indian staples, including wheat roti, onion, garlic, rajma and chana, are high in FODMAPs. If your doctor or dietitian has started you on a low-FODMAP plan, we help you find Indian dishes and swaps that fit it. The strict phase and reintroduction stay with your doctor or dietitian.

Nutrition education and practical food support. Diagnosis, medicines and medical treatment stay with your treating team.

Getting ready

What to have ready for your first consultation

You do not need to send reports before booking. We tell you how to share them before your first consultation.

  • Results from your GP or specialist, or from your patient portal
  • Any food lists or low-FODMAP plan from a registered dietitian
  • A simple diary of meals and symptoms for one or two weeks, if you can
  • Your medicines and supplements
  • What you eat on a usual day, including work meals, snacks and eating out

IBS support in New Zealand: your questions answered

Do I need an IBS diagnosis first?

This support is for adults with diagnosed IBS. If symptoms are new, unexplained or changing, see a doctor first rather than assuming they are IBS.

How much do the IBS programmes cost in New Zealand?

Core (3 months) is NZD 629 and Extended (6 months) is NZD 1,198. These are the full prices, with nothing added when you pay.

What does each programme include?

Both start with a first consultation and a written food plan within 2 working days. Core adds 3 scheduled follow-ups and WhatsApp support during agreed hours. Extended adds 6 follow-ups, priority WhatsApp support, a nutrition progress assessment at 90 days and a full progress report at 180 days.

How do I pay?

After we confirm your booking in writing, we send the payment details on WhatsApp or by email. You pay the fee in NZD; payment goes to DietXP in India, so your bank may add a cross-border fee.

When will I get my written plan?

Within 2 working days of your first consultation. Your follow-ups, booked on New Zealand time, then review how it is going and adjust the plan.

Which languages can I use?

English, Hindi or Kannada, with Maria. Tell us which you prefer when you message us.

What time are the sessions?

New Zealand is 6½ hours ahead of India, or 7½ hours in daylight saving time. We book a time that suits you.

Will I have to stop eating Indian food?

Not automatically. The conversation starts with your usual meals and individual tolerance. We can explore practical alternatives without assuming an entire cuisine is unsuitable.

Is low-FODMAP part of every programme?

No. It is not necessary or suitable for everyone. If your GP recommends it, ask about support from a registered dietitian with low-FODMAP training, for a short trial, reintroduction and personalisation. It should not become an indefinite list of forbidden foods.

Can the programme promise symptom relief?

No specific outcome is guaranteed. Symptoms can have several influences, and food changes that help one person may not help another. Your medical care remains important.

Do I need to see my GP first?

Yes, if your symptoms are new or changing, or include warning signs such as bleeding or weight loss you cannot explain. IBS should be diagnosed by a doctor before you change your diet a lot.

Is this funded by Health New Zealand?

No. DietXP is a private online service from India. For some conditions your GP can refer you to a free hospital or community dietitian, and you can use DietXP alongside that.

Can my family join?

Yes. The person who cooks or helps with meals is welcome on your calls, whether they live in New Zealand or in India. If you are contacting us for someone else, please let them know. We ask for their agreement before we discuss their health.

What happens when my programme ends?

You can finish there or ask about continuing. We explain the options and the fee before you book anything new.

Your GP stays in charge

Speak to your doctor about new, severe, persistent or worsening digestive symptoms. Do not use a food plan to delay medical assessment or stop prescribed medicines.
