IBS care in the US

IBS and Indian food in the US

The American College of Gastroenterology recommends a limited trial of a low-FODMAP diet for IBS. It notes that the three phases, restriction, reintroduction and personalisation, need a properly trained GI dietitian.

Alongside your US care team

In the US your primary care doctor or specialist diagnoses and treats the condition, and may refer you to a registered dietitian. DietXP does not replace that care. We help you turn your care team’s advice into Indian meals you can keep up at home.

Indian food in the US

Indian groceries are easy to find in places such as New Jersey, the Bay Area, Chicago’s Devon Avenue and Houston, and most supermarkets stock rice, lentils and spices. We also plan for large restaurant portions, takeout and long commutes.

Practical details

  • India is 9½ hours ahead of Eastern time and 12½ hours ahead of Pacific time during daylight saving, one hour more in winter. We book at a time that suits you.
  • Fees are in USD and are the full amount you pay.
  • In an emergency call 911.

Adapting low FODMAP to Indian meals

Wheat, onion, garlic and many dals are high in FODMAPs, which makes a standard low-FODMAP handout hard to follow in an Indian kitchen. We explain which Indian ingredients are usually high or low in FODMAPs and help you apply the plan from your registered dietitian to the dishes you cook.

Nutrition education and practical food support. Diagnosis, medicines and medical treatment stay with your treating team.

Getting ready

What to have ready for your first consultation

You do not need to send reports before booking. We tell you how to share them before your first consultation.

  • Visit summaries and lab results from your doctor or patient portal
  • Any food lists or low-FODMAP plan from a registered dietitian nutritionist
  • A simple diary of meals and symptoms for one or two weeks, if you can
  • Your medicines and supplements
  • What you eat on a usual day, including work meals, snacks and eating out

IBS support in the US: your questions answered

Do I need an IBS diagnosis first?

This support is for adults with diagnosed IBS. If symptoms are new, unexplained or changing, see a doctor first rather than assuming they are IBS.

How much do the IBS programmes cost in the US?

Core (3 months) is USD 360 and Extended (6 months) is USD 685. These are the full prices, with nothing added when you pay.

What does each programme include?

Both start with a first consultation and a written food plan within 2 working days. Core adds 3 scheduled follow-ups and WhatsApp support during agreed hours. Extended adds 6 follow-ups, priority WhatsApp support, a nutrition progress assessment at 90 days and a full progress report at 180 days.

How do I pay?

After we confirm your booking in writing, we send the payment details on WhatsApp or by email. You pay the fee in USD; payment goes to DietXP in India, so your bank may add a cross-border fee.

When will I get my written plan?

Within 2 working days of your first consultation. Your follow-ups, booked on US time, then review how it is going and adjust the plan.

Which languages can I use?

English, Hindi or Kannada, with Maria. Tell us which you prefer when you message us.

What time are the sessions?

India is 9½ hours ahead of Eastern time and 12½ hours ahead of Pacific time during daylight saving, one hour more in winter. We book at a time that suits you.

Will I have to stop eating Indian food?

Not automatically. The conversation starts with your usual meals and individual tolerance. We can explore practical alternatives without assuming an entire cuisine is unsuitable.

Is low-FODMAP part of every programme?

No. It is not necessary or suitable for everyone. If your doctor recommends it, ask about support from a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) with low-FODMAP training, for a short trial, reintroduction and personalisation. It should not become an indefinite list of forbidden foods.

Can the programme promise symptom relief?

No specific outcome is guaranteed. Symptoms can have several influences, and food changes that help one person may not help another. Your medical care remains important.

Can DietXP replace my GI dietitian?

No. If your gastroenterologist refers you to a registered dietitian for a low-FODMAP diet, follow that plan. We can help you adapt it to Indian dishes and family meals.

Will my US health insurance cover this?

No. DietXP is a private online service from India and is not billed to US insurance. Many plans, and Medicare for people with diabetes or kidney disease, cover visits with a registered dietitian, so check with your insurer if you need that.

Can my family join?

Yes. The person who cooks or helps with meals is welcome on your calls, whether they live in the US or in India. If you are contacting us for someone else, please let them know. We ask for their agreement before we discuss their health.

What happens when my programme ends?

You can finish there or ask about continuing. We explain the options and the fee before you book anything new.

Your doctor stays in charge

Speak to your doctor about new, severe, persistent or worsening digestive symptoms. Do not use a food plan to delay medical assessment or stop prescribed medicines.
